Abdominal surgery can be performed in two ways – “open” and “laparoscopic”. Open surgery requires an incision in the skin and various layers of tissue to access the required space.
Laparoscopic surgery involves making a number of very small incisions on the abdomen where long, thin surgical instruments are inserted to complete the procedure with the assistance of a camera in the abdominal space.
Where possible, the preferred method of surgery is laparoscopic, as it is less invasive, can involve less complications, and requires less recovery time. Dr. Baillie will discuss your options with you to determine the best course of action for your specific surgical needs.
